[OpenSPIM] need Firewire?

We are considering building the SPIM microscope.
I see that the parts list contains a macbook which is meant run Windows, 
with the explanation that the driver s require windows but a mac is 
needed for the firewire.
Which hardware in the list requires firewire?

Also, are the archives search-able? I tried looking there, but I did not 
know how to search, and in a quick random search I did not get lucky.
