I'm new to the whole git thing (and barely know how to code), but I cloned the github repository, branched it on Bitbucket (largely for aesthetic reasons), and have made it public. I'm sure the code isn't particularly clean, but have a look.

If this is inadequate, I can do the GitHub Pull Request instead. Let me know.

The easiest for me would be a GitHub Pull Request [*1*], but if you are
uncomfortable with such fantsy-pantsy newfangled techniques, posting the
modified repository would do quite nicely (it would take a little longer
to get included in the latter case, unfortunately, because I will be
busy with a hackathon for a week starting tomorrow, and the OpenSPIM
software developer community is still nascent).

Thank you!
Johannes
