Hi Luke,
Do you mean the beads are too weak? Typically the beads are the brightest part of the image, unless you use ones that are incompatible with your illumination/emission spectrum. We use the OpenSPIM typically on very low laser power 2-4% and the exposure times are on the order of 50-100ms when imaging strong fluorescent signal. under these conditions the green beads are extremely bright in the green channel.
