Dave,
I cut a spacer from shim stock (thin sheet of metal; find at a hobby store)
that took up the empty space. Brass is probably best as the copper in the
brass is a bit anti-bacterial. You can see I didn't follow my own advice
and made mine out of "stainless" steel. It's what I had at the time. Cut
the right length. Roll it into a tube that'll fit the holder. Perhaps put a
crimp at the top so it doesn't fall through. Cheap and cheerful.
I also use a foam stopper like you have in your image though I only use it
for replacing the syringe in the same location if I remove it for any
reason.
Nice job on the belt drive.
